Understand Which Keywords Are More Difficult to Rank
What Is Keyword Difficulty?
Keyword difficulty (also known as keyword competition) is one of the most important metrics you should consider when doing keyword research. The higher is the keyword difficulty, the harder it is to rank on the 1st SERP due to a high competition of the ranking websites.
Finding a bunch of keywords that you want to rank for is easy. The hard part is figuring out what it’ll take to rank for those keywords (i.e., “keyword difficulty”), and then using that information to prioritize and plan your SEO strategy.
Nobody knows the exact formula Google uses to rank web pages. Even if they did, it wouldn’t change the fact that some keywords are more difficult to rank for than others. That’s what makes the concept of “keyword difficulty” one of the key challenges in SEO.
Keyword Difficulty is based on Domain Authority (DA) scores of the results that rank in Google’s top 10 for a given keyword, as well as several other factors (like how many homepages vs. internal pages appear, use of query terms in the results, and more). In general, scores roughly correspond to a weighted average of the DA of the top 10, and the other inputs (DA, homepages, query term use, etc) modify that weighted average.
